They may be ordered during a routine checkup, to investigate symptoms or to monitor a condition or treatment. The right tests depend on your health history and current needs—not every person needs the same panel.

What are general lab tests?

A laboratory test examines a sample of blood, urine or another body fluid or tissue. Results can help a healthcare professional screen for certain conditions, narrow down a diagnosis, monitor a chronic condition or evaluate how well a treatment is working.

Lab results are only one part of the clinical picture. Your healthcare professional interprets them alongside your symptoms, physical examination, personal and family history, medications and previous results.

Common blood and urine tests

Depending on the reason for your visit, a healthcare professional may recommend one or more of the following:

Complete blood count (CBC). Measures components such as red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. It may provide clues related to anemia, infection and other concerns.

Basic or comprehensive metabolic panel (BMP or CMP). Measures substances in the blood that can provide information about blood sugar, electrolytes, kidney function and, with a CMP, liver-related markers and proteins.

Lipid panel. Measures cholesterol and triglycerides to help assess cardiovascular risk.

Blood glucose or A1C. Helps screen for and monitor prediabetes or diabetes. A1C reflects average blood glucose over roughly the previous two to three months.

Thyroid tests. May be ordered when symptoms or history suggest a possible thyroid concern.

Urinalysis. Examines urine for findings that may be associated with urinary tract, kidney or metabolic concerns.

This is not a universal checklist. Test selection should be individualized, and additional testing may be appropriate depending on symptoms, age, risk factors and medical history.

Why might a healthcare professional order lab work?

General lab tests may be used to:

establish or update a health baseline;

look for changes before symptoms become obvious;

evaluate symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, increased thirst or unexplained weight changes;

monitor conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol or kidney disease;

check how a medication or treatment is affecting the body; or

decide whether additional evaluation is needed.

Normal results do not always rule out a health problem, and a result outside the reference range does not automatically mean that you have a disease. Context and follow-up matter.

Do you need to fast before lab testing?

Many tests require no special preparation. Some tests may require fasting or other instructions, however, and the required preparation can vary. Ask the clinic whether you should fast and for how long before your appointment.

Tell your healthcare professional about prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and supplements. Do not stop taking medicine unless a healthcare professional specifically tells you to do so. If you were unable to follow the preparation instructions, tell the person collecting your sample because food, exercise, medicines and other factors can affect certain results.

What happens during a blood draw?

For many blood tests, a healthcare professional places a small needle into a vein in your arm and collects one or more tubes of blood. The collection is usually brief. You may feel a quick pinch, and mild bruising can occur afterward.

Let the healthcare professional know if you have previously felt faint during a blood draw, take blood-thinning medicine, have a bleeding disorder or are concerned about needles. These details can help the team make the experience safer and more comfortable.

How should you read your results?

Use the reference range printed on your own laboratory report. Laboratories may use different methods, units and reference ranges, so values found online—or even results from another laboratory—may not be directly comparable.

Your healthcare professional will consider whether a result is slightly or significantly outside the range, whether it has changed over time and whether it matches your symptoms and health history. One unexpected result may lead to repeat testing or a different test rather than an immediate diagnosis.

Discuss general lab tests with a Houston primary care professional

Viera HealthCare can help you understand which laboratory tests may be appropriate for your health needs and review what your results mean in context.
